Central Government Holidays, 2027

17 gazetted holidays are fixed by the official list. Two more are yours to choose from 32. This page turns the DoPT circular into something you can actually plan a year around.

Two very different kinds of day off

Every Central Government employee at an administrative office in Delhi gets the same 17 gazetted holidays in 2027 — the office simply shuts, nobody applies for it, and it never touches a leave account. Alongside that sits a quieter entitlement: from a list of 32 restricted holidays, you personally choose any two. The office stays open on those days; you don’t have to.

2027 happens to be an unusually lopsided year for this. Six of the 17 gazetted holidays already fall on a Saturday or Sunday — Independence Day and Milad-un-Nabi even share the same Sunday, 15 August — and the DoPT order is explicit that no substitute weekday is granted when that happens. That makes your two restricted holidays more valuable than usual: chosen well, they’re the main lever you have left to actually gain a day off.

Offices outside Delhi work a little differently — they observe 14 compulsory holidays plus 3 chosen locally by the Welfare Coordination Committee from a separate list of 12 regional options, on top of the same personal restricted-holiday allowance. What follows is the full 2027 list, followed by a small planner to help you pick your two well.

Worth knowing: once your office notifies its final restricted-holiday list for the year, the dates can’t be changed — so it’s worth deciding early rather than defaulting to whatever’s left in December.

The 2027 ledger

DateDayOccasionType

This is the full Annexure-I and Annexure-II list for Delhi/New Delhi administrative offices, as notified on 16 July 2026. Dates for Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Muharram and Id-e-Milad follow the lunar calendar and are provisional until confirmed by moon-sighting. Weekend tags mark dates already falling on a Saturday or Sunday.

The best combinations in 2027

4 days
A Holi long weekend
Take Holika Dahan (Mon 22 Mar) as an RH, and it runs straight into Holi (Tue 23 Mar, gazetted) off the back of the weekend — Sat 20 to Tue 23, four days, for one restricted holiday.
4 days
A full Dussehra break
Spend both restricted holidays on Mahashtami (Thu 7 Oct) and Mahanavmi (Fri 8 Oct), and they run into Dussehra itself (Sat 9, gazetted) and the Sunday — four straight days.
4 days
Diwali, extended
One RH on Naraka Chaturdasi (Thu 28 Oct) turns Diwali (Fri 29 Oct, gazetted) into a four-day run through the weekend — and leaves your second RH free for later in the year.
4 days
Republic Day, no RH needed
Republic Day falls Tuesday 26 January. A single day of casual leave on Monday 25th bridges the weekend into it — four days off without touching your restricted-holiday allowance.

Common questions

What’s the difference between gazetted and restricted holidays?

A gazetted holiday shuts every Central Government administrative office in Delhi automatically — nobody applies for it, and it’s published in the official Gazette of India. A restricted holiday is optional: the office stays open, and each employee individually chooses two of the 32 listed occasions to take off.

Why do Independence Day and Milad-un-Nabi share the same date in 2027?

Both fall on Sunday, 15 August 2027. The DoPT order specifically addresses this kind of overlap: when more than one gazetted festival lands on the same day, or on a weekly off, no substitute holiday is granted for either.

What happens when a gazetted holiday falls on a weekend?

Nothing extra. Six of the 2027 gazetted holidays — Independence Day, Milad-un-Nabi, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Guru Nanak’s Birthday and Christmas — fall on a Saturday or Sunday, and the order is clear that no substitute weekday is allowed in that situation.

Do offices outside Delhi follow the same list?

Not exactly. They observe 14 compulsory holidays rather than 17, then add three more chosen locally by the Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee from a separate list of 12 regional options — on top of the same personal allowance of two restricted holidays.

Is Diwali always observed on the Deepavali date itself?

Usually, yes — Friday 29 October 2027 in the official list. But the order allows an exception: if a state government has declared Naraka Chaturdasi (28 October) as its compulsory Diwali holiday instead, Central Government offices in that state may follow suit.

Can restricted holidays be carried forward or encashed?

No. The two restricted holidays are a per-year allowance — unused ones lapse at year-end, with no encashment and no carry-forward into 2028.

Offices outside Delhi, industrial/commercial establishments, banks and Indian missions abroad follow separate variants described in the order. Islamic-calendar dates are provisional pending moon sighting. Always confirm your office’s locally notified list before declaring your two restricted holidays.
