Electrician, Shipwright Wood and Mechanic Diesel are among the trades with the most seats. Several trades have just one or two seats, so competition varies a lot from trade to trade.

💡 Pro Tip: Seat numbers for each trade are printed in the official notification (Employment News, 03–09 October 2026). Check your own trade’s seats before applying, because a trade with only a handful of seats will be far more competitive.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

Your qualification depends on the trade you choose.

TradeQualification Required
RiggerMinimum 50% aggregate in Class 8
Crane Operator Overhead (SI)Minimum 50% aggregate in Class 10
All other 30 tradesMinimum 50% in relevant subjects in Class 10, plus minimum 50% aggregate in ITI (all semesters combined) in the matching trade under NCVT or SCVT

Here, ITI means Industrial Training Institute, NCVT is the National Council for Vocational Training and SCVT is the State Council for Vocational Training. The ITI trade you completed must be eligible for the apprenticeship trade as per Schedule I of the Apprenticeship Rules, 1992.

✅ Only freshers can apply. The notification invites candidates who are new to apprenticeship training.

Age Limit

The Apprentices Act sets no upper age limit for apprenticeship training. Age relaxation is therefore not applicable to any category.

CategoryMinimum AgeMaximum Age
General / EWS14 yearsNo upper limit
OBC-NCL14 yearsNo upper limit
SC / ST14 yearsNo upper limit
PwBD14 yearsNo upper limit

The minimum age is counted as on the crucial date given in the notification. [Check official notification for the exact date]

Physical Standards

You must meet the basic fitness standards under the Apprentices Rules, 1992:

  • Height: at least 137 cm
  • Weight: at least 25.4 kg
  • Chest expansion: at least 3.8 cm
  • Free from tuberculosis, contagious diseases and any eye or eyelid disease
  • Free from chronic illness of major body systems

Application Fee

The notification does not mention any application fee for any category. Apprenticeship registrations are normally free, but confirm this on the portal at the time of registration.

⚠️ Never pay money to any agent or website that promises a seat in this apprenticeship. Selection is purely through the published process.

The stipend is paid monthly as per the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) guideline dated 15 September 2025. Most trades pay the top rate.

TradeTraining PeriodMonthly Stipend
Most trades (Electrician, Fitter, Welder, Mechanic Diesel, COPA, etc.)One year₹9,600
Shipwright SteelTwo years₹9,600
Pattern Maker18 months₹9,600
Crane Operator Overhead (SI)15 months₹8,200
RiggerTwo years₹6,800

Let’s put that in rupees. A one-year trade at ₹9,600 per month adds up to ₹1,15,200 over the training period. A Shipwright Steel apprentice earns about ₹2,30,400 over two years, while a Rigger earns about ₹1,63,200 over the same two years.

Apprentices are not treated as regular employees. Benefits such as the permanent-staff health scheme do not apply, and medical cover follows the Apprentices Act.

Selection has four stages. There is no interview.

  1. Shortlisting of applications: Merit is prepared from your Class 10 and ITI marks.
  2. Written examination: An objective test on an OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheet.
  3. Document verification: Original documents you uploaded are checked at the Dockyard Apprentice School.
  4. Medical examination: A fitness certificate from a government hospital is needed before you are engaged.

How Shortlisting Works

Everyone eligible is normally allowed to appear. If applications are too many for the seats, the authority can shortlist candidates in a 1:25 ratio for every vacancy in each trade and category.

For example, if a trade has 10 seats in one category, up to 250 candidates could be called for the written test. Merit for shortlisting gives equal weight (50:50) to Class 10 marks and ITI marks. Crane Operator uses 100% Class 10 marks, and Rigger uses 100% Class 8 marks.

Written Examination Pattern

The test has 100 objective questions of one mark each, to be solved in two hours. It is bilingual (English and Hindi). The level matches the Class 10 syllabus, except for Rigger, which follows the Class 8 syllabus.

SubjectMaximum Marks
General Science35
Mathematics35
General Knowledge30
Total100

The notification summary does not mention negative marking. [Check official notification]

Tie-Break Rules

If two candidates score the same in the written test, the older candidate gets the higher rank. If the date of birth is also the same, the first name in alphabetical order decides.

Is This a Permanent Job? What Happens After Training?

No. Apprenticeship training does not automatically lead to employment at the Dockyard. It is a skill-building programme, and the stipend is not a salary.

What you do gain is real workshop experience in a naval ship repair environment. Under the Apprentices Act, apprentices who complete training and clear the assessment receive a National Apprenticeship Certificate. Some recruitments in government and public sector organisations give weightage to apprenticeship experience, so this certificate can strengthen your profile.

How to Prepare for the Written Test

The paper is based on Class 10 basics, so revision matters more than new learning. Two hours for 100 questions gives you just over one minute per question.

  • Mathematics (35 marks): Revise percentages, ratio, mensuration, algebra basics and simple geometry. Solve past NCERT-level exercises.
  • General Science (35 marks): Focus on physics and chemistry fundamentals such as force, electricity, heat, acids and bases, and metals.
  • General Knowledge (30 marks): Read current affairs, basic Indian geography and the Indian Navy’s role. Attempt these first, as they are quick marks.
  • Practice OMR: Shade answers neatly in a mock test so you do not lose time or marks on the day.

Since the shortlist depends heavily on your Class 10 and ITI marks, keep your consolidated ITI marksheet ready and check it for errors early.
