About APSC – Assam Public Service Commission

The Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) is a constitutional body established under Article 315 of the Indian Constitution. It is the premier recruitment authority for Group A and Group B gazetted posts in the Assam state government. The Commission is headquartered at Jawaharnagar, Khanapara, Guwahati-781022.

APSC conducts the Combined Competitive Examination every year to select officers for Assam’s premier civil services — most importantly the Assam Civil Service (ACS) and the Assam Police Service (APS). Clearing the APSC CCE is one of the most coveted achievements for government job aspirants in Assam, equivalent to clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination at the national level.

The Commission follows a three-stage selection process: Preliminary Examination, Main Written Examination, and Interview/Personality Test — all governed by the Assam Public Services Combined Competitive Examination Rules, 1989 (as amended till 2023). You can access the official rules and all past notifications on www.apsc.nic.in.

Selection Process for APSC CCE 2025

The Combined Competitive Examination is conducted in two successive stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type) — A screening test consisting of two papers of 200 marks each (400 marks total), each of 2 hours duration. Paper-II is qualifying in nature with a minimum passing mark of 33%. There is negative marking: one-fourth of marks deducted for each wrong answer. Prelims marks do NOT count towards your final merit.
  2. Main Examination (Written + Interview) — Candidates who clear the Prelims (11–12 times the number of vacancies per category) sit for the Main Written Examination. This consists of six papers: one Essay paper (250 marks) and five General Studies papers (250 marks each) — totalling 1,500 marks for written papers. You can write your answer papers in English or Assamese.
  3. Interview / Personality Test — Candidates who clear the Main Written Examination (in the ratio of 1:3 against advertised vacancies) are called for the Interview, carrying 180 marks. Final ranking is based on a total of 1,680 marks (Written + Interview combined).
