MACP — Modified Assured Career Progression is one of the most valuable yet frequently missed benefits available to Central Government employees. If you have completed 10, 20, or 30 years of service without receiving a regular promotion, you are entitled to one increment in the next higher Pay Matrix Level. Many employees lose this benefit simply because they do not know when to apply.

Our free MACP Eligibility Checker instantly tells you your current MACP status, how many milestones you have crossed, whether MACP is due right now, and exactly when your next MACP milestone is approaching. All you need is your date of joining and the number of regular promotions you have received.

Important: MACP is not granted automatically. You must apply through your Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) to your Pay and Accounts Office (PAO). Missing the application means losing out on financial benefit permanently for that milestone.

Frequently Asked Questions — MACP Checker

Q: What is MACP and who is eligible for it?

MACP stands for Modified Assured Career Progression. It is a financial benefit given to Central Government employees who have not received regular promotions at 10, 20, and 30 years of service. Under MACP, the employee gets one increment in the immediate next Pay Matrix Level (not just grade pay). It was introduced to ensure that employees do not stagnate financially even when promotions are not available.

Q: What is the difference between MACP and ACP?

A: ACP (Assured Career Progression) was the older scheme under 5th Pay Commission, which gave upgradation after 12 and 24 years. MACP replaced ACP from September 1, 2008 under the 6th Pay Commission. MACP provides 3 financial upgradations at 10, 20, and 30 years (vs 2 under ACP) and is based on the Pay Matrix Level system under the 7th CPC.

Q: Does a promotion cancel my MACP benefit?

Yes. Each regular promotion you receive is counted against your MACP entitlement. If you have received 1 promotion and have completed 10 years of service, you are not entitled to the 10-year MACP. However, if you cross the 20-year milestone with only 1 promotion, you are entitled to 1 MACP at that point. The maximum MACP benefits in an entire career is 3.

Q: Does a financial upgradation under the old ACP scheme count against MACP?

Yes, as per DoPT orders, ACP upgradations received before September 1, 2008 are counted against the MACP entitlement. If you received 2 ACP upgradations before 2008, you may not be entitled to the first 2 MACPs under the new scheme.

Q: How do I apply for MACP? What is the process?

Step 1: Check your eligibility using the calculator above.
Step 2: Write an application to your DDO mentioning your date of joining and service details.
Step 3: Your DDO verifies your service record and forwards to PAO.
Step 4: PAO issues the MACP order.
Step 5: The benefit is applied from the due date (not application date), so arrears are payable from the milestone date.

Q: Can I get MACP if I was on deputation or study leave?

The qualifying service for MACP is continuous regular service. Deputation periods generally count as qualifying service. However, EOL (Extra-Ordinary Leave) without medical certificate and periods of suspension do not count. Refer to your service book or consult your DDO for exact calculations if you have breaks in service.

Q: What benefit does MACP actually give in terms of money?

MACP gives you one increment in the next Pay Matrix Level. The value of one increment depends on your current level. For example, in Pay Level 6, one increment is ₹1,900 per month. Additionally, your DA, HRA, and other allowances also increase based on the higher basic pay, making the total annual benefit significant — often ₹30,000 to ₹60,000+ per year.

Q: What is the latest court ruling or order on MACP disputes?

Several CAT (Central Administrative Tribunal) and Supreme Court rulings have affirmed that MACP cannot be denied on technical grounds and must be granted from the due date. If your MACP was denied or delayed, you can approach the CAT with a petition. Always keep your service book updated and consult your Ministry’s service rules for specific disputes.
