MPHC Stenographer Eligibility 2026
Educational Qualification
Every post asks for the same four basics. Only the shorthand speed and language change.
- Graduation: A bachelor’s degree in any subject from a recognised university.
- CPCT: A pass in the Computer Proficiency Certification Test (CPCT) score card exam conducted by the M.P. Agency for Promotion of Information Technology (MAP-IT), or by another agency recognised by the MP Government.
- Shorthand: Hindi shorthand at 100 WPM for Grade-II, Hindi at 80 WPM for Grade-III and Court Manager Staff, and English at 80 WPM for Assistant Grade-III (English Knowing). The certificate must come from a board or institution recognised by the MP Government.
- Computer diploma: A one-year diploma in Computer Application from an institution recognised by the MP Government.
✅ All four requirements are mandatory. A graduate with shorthand but no CPCT score card or computer diploma will not be eligible.
Age Limit (as on 01 January 2026)
The minimum age is 18 years for all posts. The age is counted as on 01 January 2026.
| Category | Minimum Age | Maximum Age |
|---|---|---|
| Male, unreserved (MP and other states) | 18 years | 40 years |
| Male, EWS (MP) | 18 years | 40 years |
| Male and female, OBC / SC / ST (MP) | 18 years | 45 years |
| MP Government, corporation, board or autonomous body employees and Home Guards | 18 years | 45 years |
| All women and all Divyang candidates (MP and other states) | 18 years | 45 years |
Extra relaxations apply in two cases:
- Ex-servicemen can subtract their full defence service from their age. The resulting age must not exceed the upper limit by more than three years.
- Contract staff of MP High Court or MP district courts who have worked at least five years on a post equal to or higher than the vacant one get relaxation equal to their contract service. Their age cannot cross 55 years.
MPHC Stenographer Application Fee 2026
You pay the fee online. A portal charge applies to every category, including those with no exam fee.
| Category | Exam Fee | Portal and Other Charges | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unreserved candidates and applicants from outside MP | ₹200 | ₹743.40 | ₹943.40 |
| OBC, SC, ST, EWS (MP natives only) | ₹0 | ₹743.40 | ₹743.40 |
| All Divyang candidates | ₹0 | ₹743.40 | ₹743.40 |
There is no refund or adjustment of the fee. The High Court can also change the fee, and you would have to pay the revised amount.
💡 Pro Tip: Budget for a second payment. If you clear the preliminary exam, you must pay another ₹743.40 portal fee for the skill test. Skip it, and your candidature is treated as withdrawn. Over both stages, unreserved candidates pay ₹1,686.80, and reserved or Divyang candidates pay ₹1,486.80.
If money is deducted but your form shows “Payment Status – Fail”, wait 48 to 72 hours for the status to update before paying again.
MPHC Stenographer Salary 2026
The notification lists a pay scale of ₹5,200 to ₹20,200 with Grade Pay between ₹1,900 and ₹2,800. This follows the 6th Central Pay Commission (CPC) structure.
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Pay Scale | ₹5,200 – ₹20,200 |
| Grade Pay | ₹1,900 – ₹2,800 (post-wise value: [Check official notification]) |
| Starting figure before allowances | ₹7,100 to ₹8,000 (pay band minimum plus grade pay) |
| Allowances | Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA) and others as per MP Government rules |
The starting figure above is simple arithmetic on the published scale. What reaches your bank account will depend on the DA and HRA rates in force at the time of joining, and on any pay revision the state has applied. The notification does not publish a monthly in-hand figure.
Beyond the pay, a district court posting offers a permanent state government job with regular promotion avenues. It also gives you a fixed workplace in your home state.
MPHC Stenographer Selection Process 2026
Selection has two stages. There is no interview mentioned in the notification.
- Online Preliminary Examination (100 marks): A computer-based objective test common to all four posts.
- Shorthand Skill Test (100 marks): A Hindi shorthand test for Stenographer posts, and an English shorthand test for Assistant Grade-III (English Knowing).
⚠️ The preliminary exam is a screening test only. Its marks are not counted in the final result. The skill test is also qualifying in nature. For exactly how the final merit list is prepared, read the full notification. [Check official notification]
MPHC Stenographer Exam Pattern 2026 (Preliminary)
The paper has 100 multiple-choice questions of one mark each, to be solved in 120 minutes. That works out to about 1.2 minutes per question.
| Subject | Questions | Marks | Medium |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Knowledge and General Studies (including MP GK) | 20 | 20 | Hindi and English |
| Maths and Logical Reasoning | 20 | 20 | Hindi and English |
| General Hindi | 20 | 20 | Hindi |
| English Knowledge | 20 | 20 | English |
| Computer Knowledge | 20 | 20 | English |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Negative marking: [Check official notification]
Shortlisting for the Skill Test
Candidates are called for the skill test in the ratio of 1:5 in each category, which means roughly five candidates per post. All candidates tied at the last cut-off mark are included, even if that crosses the ratio. For 418 posts, this works out to around 2,000 candidates being shortlisted, and more if ties occur.
MPHC Stenographer Skill Test 2026
| Post | Dictation | Transcription Time |
|---|---|---|
| Stenographer Grade-II, Grade-III and Court Manager Staff | About 400 words in Hindi, over 5 minutes | 30 minutes |
| Assistant Grade-III (English Knowing) | About 400 words in English, over 5 minutes | 30 minutes |
Four hundred words in five minutes means a speed of 80 WPM, which matches the lower certificate requirement.
Keep these rules in mind:
- You get a notebook for taking dictation. If you write in longhand instead of shorthand, you lose full marks.
- A mock dictation is played first, so you can confirm that you can hear clearly.
- Making noise or disturbing others during dictation or typing leads to removal from the hall and cancellation of candidature.
Minimum qualifying marks in the skill test:
| Category | Minimum Marks |
|---|---|
| General and OBC | 55% |
| SC | 45% |
| ST and Divyang | 40% |
| EWS | 49.5% |
If two candidates have equal marks, the older candidate gets preference.
MPHC Stenographer Preparation Strategy – Prelims and Skill Test
Because the preliminary exam only screens candidates for the skill test, your first target is a safe rank within the 1:5 cut-off. The skill test then decides whether you qualify.
- Split your time evenly. Each of the five subjects carries 20 marks, so no section is a throwaway. Computer Knowledge and General Hindi are often the quickest marks.
- Cover MP-specific GK. The GK section explicitly includes Madhya Pradesh topics: geography, history, schemes and current affairs.
- Practise under the clock. At 1.2 minutes a question, speed matters. Take timed online mock tests at least twice a week.
- Keep your shorthand warm. Even if you hold a certificate, practise daily dictation at 80 WPM or above, and then type the transcript against a 30-minute limit.
- Never fall back on longhand. The notebook rule means that your outlines need to be quick and readable.
